- Story Text: Overnight fighting between U.S. forces and
guerrillas in the rebellious city of Falluja killed at
least 10 Iraqis and wounded 36, a doctor at the city's main
hospital said on Sunday (August 1, 2004).
Residents said there had been heavy clashes in some
parts of the city, with U.S. marines backed by tanks and
aircraft.
After weeks of fighting in Falluja in April in which
hundreds of Iraqis were killed, U.S. marines pulled out of
the city, handing over responsibility for security to an
Iraqi force. Critics say the city has become a safe haven
for guerrillas and kidnappers.
Witnesses said that insurgents fired several mortar
shells on the U.S. troops.
Insurgents also set two trucks carrying portable
housing for U.S. troops on fire .
U.S. army has no immediate word on the clashes.
Several times over the past few months, U.S. forces
have targeted buildings in the city that they say were
being used by militants linked to al Qaeda ally Abu Musab
al-Zarqawi.
After fierce clashes in Falluja in April that killed
hundreds of Iraqis, U.S. forces withdrew from the city and
handed over security to an Iraqi force. Critics say the
city has become a safe haven for guerrillas and kidnappers.
