- Story Text: The United States has increased security around its
embassy in Amman to guard against what it called a terrorist
threat. It advised U.S. nationals in the country to take extra
care.
A message issued by an embassy warden to U.S. nationals
and obtained by Reuters read: "The United States government
has information concerning terrorist targeting of the U.S
embassy in Amman."
The advisory said that although it appeared only the
embassy was targeted, the full dimensions of the threat are
not known and it could not rule out the possibility that
terrorists may also plan to target other venues in Jordan.
The embassy issued a similar warning in December after
Jordan arrested 28 followers of terrorism suspect Osama bin
Laden on charges of planning attacks against U.S. and tourist
targets in the kingdom.
Saudi exile bin Laden, who is based in Afghanistan, is
wanted by the United States for allegedly causing explosions
at two U.S. embassies in east Africa in 1998 that killed more
than 200 people.
