- Story Text: Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon met South African
President Thabo Mbeki and the Capitol Hill leadership during
his trip to Washington.
Before leaving Washington, Sharon repeated that Israel
insists on a total halt to violence before pushing ahead with
the U.S-brokered peace plan.
In a meeting with Senate Majority leader Tom Daschle and
Senate minority leader Trent Lott, Sharon said "Peace should
provide security and that is the most important thing."
He returns home on Thursday (June 28) after a meeting with
President George W. Bush that raised speculation in Israel of
a rift between the two leaders on whether the U.S.-sponsored
peace plan would kick in if violence did not cease.
Nearly 600 people have been killed in nine months of
fighting since a Palestinian uprising against Israeli
occupation erupted last September after peace negotiations
deadlocked.
In Sharon's meeting with Thabo Mbeki the leaders discussed
the question of Palestinian participation in normal economic
activity.
Asked about South Africa's role in the Middle East, Mbeki
said, "I think we are in the fortunate position in that both
sides speak quite openly to us."
