  • Story Text: After three days of the four day World Amateur Golf Team Championship at the Olivos Club near Buenos Aires, Argentina, Australia was still in the lead following a spectacular surgeon the second day.

    Argentina led at the end oft he first day's play for the world championship and the Eisenhower Trophy, with the defending champions -- the United States -- standing in sixth place.

    But it was during the third day's competition on Friday (October 20) that the U.S. Team narrowed the gap and moved from sixth to second place.

    The Australians totalled 214 on Friday, but the Americans, making their push for the front, had the best aggregate of 210. They jumped from seven strokes behind to only three strokes more than the Australians.

    The U.S. Team's top scorer was Ben Crenshaw, who shot 69. Vinny Giles, the U.S. Amateur Champion, took 70 and Mark Hayes a second successive 71.

    South Africa moved into third place, three strokes ahead of the Spanish Team. Argentina, the first round leader, stood in fifth place just one stroke ahead of Britain, Ireland and New Zealand, all tied in sixth place.
