- Story Text: World chess champion Gary Kasparov and Sting battled it
out on the chess board in New York's Times Square.
Sting and band members took on World Chess Champion
Gary Kasparov in a simultaneous chess match to honor the World
School chess champions on Thursday (June 29).
Sting's song, "Every move you make..." might have taken
a different meaning for the rocker as he faced the World
Champion of Chess.
The event was simulcast on the Internet as well as on a
Jumbotron outside the ABC Studios in Times Square. Visitors in
the area could watch as Kasparov wandered from band member to
band member, taking each move in his stride.
One by one, Sting's band members were defeated by
Kasparov. Finally, after a half hour of play, Sting conceded
his match to the World Champion. At this point, "King of Pain"
might have been an appropriate title for the rocker who never
really thought he had a chance of beating Kasparov. Speaking
to the media after the match he said, "It like taking on a
tank division."
When a reporter asked him if he learned anything, Sting
replied, "Yeah, don't play the world champion. I had a great
time. I've played Gary a number of times and its always fun.
This was public humiliation, but I don't mind."
While Sting lost the match, he described some
consolation, "I took his queen before he took mine"
The World School Chess Championship was the first major
special event to take place via kasparaovChess.com. More than
600 schools from 24 countries representing all five continents
around the world have been competing in a chess tournament via
the Internet since March 1, 2000.
