  • Story Text: Egyptian President Anwar Sadat arrived back in Cairo on Sunday (9 November) following a 16 day tour of France, the United States and Britain. He was greeted enthusiastically by thousands of well wishers chanting and carrying banners.

    His tour is being described as an unqualified success in Egypt although President Sadat has come under some criticism from other Arab leaders.

    Egyptian officials say the tour achieved its goals: to win understanding for the Arab point of view on the Middle East conflict; to convince has hosts of Egypt's sincerity in opening to the West; and to portray his country as worthy of investment.

    During his visit to the U.S., he initialled an agreement expected to lead to the lead to the sale of two American nuclear reactors to Egypt. President Ford has also asked Congress to approve 1,000 million dollars in economic and food aid, three times the present level.

    President Sadat has also indicated that restrictions on the sale of the Anglo French Jaguar jet fighter would be removed in the face of a firm offer to purchase from Egypt.

    But his accomplishments apparently have failed to stir enthusiasm from Syria and the Palestine Liberation Organisation.

    Syria has remained right lipped about the visit and the PLO has said Egypt should be wary of getting too close to the U.S. The PLO considers the US to be the major influence on Israeli policy in the Mideast.

    Despite President Sadat's warmer relations with the Western nations, he has stated flatly that he hopes to retain good relations with the Soviet Union.
