- Story Text: The United Nations has stepped up the evacuation of the
non-essential staff from the Kuwait-Iraq border area in
anticipation of the outbreak of hostilities.
United Nations monitors stepped up their evacuation of
the border area between Kuwait and Iraq on Wednesday (March
12, 2003) with the removal of a further convoy of 12 vehicles.
The U.N. announced plans at the weekend to evacuate 155
non-essential military staff in addition to 155 civilian
staff.
A convoy of United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observer Mission
(UNIKOM) has made the journey from a location near Kuwait's
border with Iraq to Kuwait City.
The United Nations has declared it would evacuate its
forces from the 15km demilitarised zone separating Iraq and
Kuwait in the event of a US invasion of Iraq.
The zone was created in 1991, shortly after the Gulf war,
and has been patrolled since by a mainly Bangladeshi UN force
known as Unikom.
In total, Unikom numbers 775 Bangladeshi soldiers and 195
military observers drawn from the armed forces of China,
Russia, France, Britain and the US.
