  • Story Text: Senior officials from the United States, Israel, the PLO and Egypt, all impatient to bring talks on Palestinian self-rule to a quick conclusion, met in Cairo on Thursday (April 28) amid predictions that agreement was at last in sight.

    United States (U.S.) Secretary of State Warren Christopher announced that PLO (Palestine Liberation Organisation) leader Yasser Arafat had agreed to meet Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres -- another sign that the five months of negotiations were coming to a head.

    Arafat said the meeting might take place on Friday in the presence of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

    Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa, speaking after meeting Peres, said there would be a meeting of all four leaders on Thursday.

    Christopher, Arafat and Peres have all arrived within the past 24 hours to give the talks a final push.

    "It appears those negotiations are making good progress...We want to be here and assist in any way we can as they come closer and closer to finalisation. I believe they are down to very few issues," Christopher said after talks with Arafat.

    "We will be able to have very soon a comprehensive and peaceful solution for the whole area. We are trying now with the two (PLO and Israeli) delegations," Arafat added.
