- Story Text: The foreign ministers of Germany and Japan have called
for a United Nations resolution on the reconstruction of Iraq.
Fischer met his Japanese counterpart Yoriko Kawaguchi
in Berlin on Thursday (April 10, 2003). The main topic of
discussion was the situation in a post-war Iraq.
"We have talked about the role of the United Nations and
we share the position that the United Nations is essential,"
Germany's Joschka Fischer said after meeting Kawaguchi in
Berlin.
"We think the legitimation of the United Nations and a
resolution is the best and the necessary instrument at the
moment and as far as we are concerneed, we are going into the
discussion with an open mind and are prepared to do our share
to get a common position," he said.
Kawaguchi said: "We share the opinion that we have to be
flexible and dynamic in the reconstruction efforts and that we
have to work towards a U.N. resolution." She added that Japan
has put forth suggestions of elements which should be included
in the resolution.
Fischer said he hoped Japan could take a crucial role in
bringing together international partners on Iraq.
