- Story Text: United States soldiers have been conducting raids
and making arrest in a search for militants in Baquba.
In the town of Baquba, 65 km (40 miles) north of the
Iraqi capital, Baghdad, U.S. soldiers from the 2nd Brigade
on Thursday (January 1, 2003) launched a daylight raid to hunt
members of a militant cell blamed for attacks on U.S.
forces.
A large haul of weapons was also seized in the raids.
Nine men were arrested and taken into U.S custody.
During the operation U.S troops came under fire from a
wooded area. Troops returned fire but failed to identify
the source. There were no U.S casualties.
U.S. forces say raids north of the capital have
resulted in the capture of about 300 rockets, similar to
weapons guerrillas used to pound Baghdad hotels and
embassies in attacks that sowed fear across the capital on
Christmas Day.
