- Story Text: The President of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zaid, has visited Pakistan on a four-day State Visit.
Sheikh Zaid, on Sunday (10 March), attended a great pageant given in his honour in the Fortress Stadium, Lahore, where -- accompanied by Pakistan Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto -- he watched displays by lancers on horseback, rural dancers and dancing camels and horses.
The two leaders arrived in the stadium seated in a State coach pulled by decorated horses.
The previous day Sheikh Zaid and Mr. Bhutto had more than an hour of talks, during which they reviewed current developments in international relations, with particular reference to their own region. They also expressed a desire to strengthen ties between their two countries. The world oil situation was also believed to have been raised.
There have been long historical links between Pakistan and the Sheikhdoms of the Arabian Gulf. Since the First World War many of the British Government officials who administrated the Trucial States were recruited from the Indian Civil Service. And, as late as 1947, the Government of India and the British India Office exercised basic responsibility for these Arab sheikhdoms.
The population of Abu Dhabi has been boosted over the years by immigration from Pakistan.
On Tuesday (12 March) Sheikh Zaid will lay the foundation stone for a women's hospital at Larkana, birthplace of Mr. Bhutto.
