- Story Text: Two teams, one two seater car and national pride at
stake. In the end, Germany thought it was all over; and it was
as England who proceeded to beat them with a final score
England 14 and Germany 13 in the second round of the
Pre-Munich clash for car stuffing.
In a Pre-Munich Germany vs. England clash, two teams
from each country dressed in full team football kits gathered
in London's Trafalgar square on
Thursday (August 30) to take part in the World Record Smart
car stuffing competition.
The two countries are traditional footballing rivals
because of a series of thrilling encounters over the years,
including England's World Cup victory over Germany in Wembley
in 1966 and this event was another chance to go head to head
for a record.
With an adjudicator from Guinness Book of Records acting
as referee both teams were aiming to beat the existing world
record set in 1999 in Dattaln, Germany and stuff as many
people as possible into a two seater car.
The national pride of both teams was at stake as 15
English and 15 Germans fans competed for the world record bid.
Crowds of tourists watched both teams attempted to get at
every team member into the Mercedes Smart car with the winners
having gloating rights ahead of Saturday's (September 1)
match.
England won the toss and elected to go first. Unlike
Saturdays' qualifier, there was no heavy security presence and
preparations for both teams included a spot of light jogging
and stretching on the spot.
To compete, each of the finalists had to be at least 5ft
(1.5 metre) tall and over the age of 18 before they were
allowed wear their team kit and to win, the doors of the car
had to remain shut for at least 10 seconds before a result was
declared.
When the whistle blew, England quickly moved ahead with a
promising lead. Despite some tactical mistakes they triumphed
with a total of thirteen people in the car, not enough to
break the existing world record but a credible effort. Germany
followed close behind and although they were penalised for
breaking the rear-view mirror, they still managed to draw with
England with a score of 13-13 in the first round.
Spurred on by Germany's misfortune, the English team
changed tactics for a second attempt at the title and and took
the lead by managing to stuff 14 people in the car; with an
extra person on the dashboard.
The pressure was too much for Germany whose second attempt
went into extra time and they finally had to concede defeat
though injury. The final score England 14, Germany 13.
