- Story Text: The United Arab Emirates has asked the Middle East
quartet to "more than double its efforts to reach a just
solution" in the Middle East crisis.
The United Arab Emirates has asked the Middle East
quartet (the European Union, Russia, the United Nations and
the United States) on Tuesday (April 27) to help in the
Middle East crisis.
"Peace in our region is not just important for our
region but for the entire world," Foreign minister and
Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed al-Nahayan
told reporters in Berlin.
"The Middle East issue is therefore of big importance
and we ask Germany to increase its contribution and we hope
that the quartet will more than double its efforts to reach
a just solution," Hamdan said after a meeting with German
Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.
Schroeder refused to answer questions from reporters after
the short news conference, saying that some one
hundred businessmen were waiting for him and Sheikh Hamdan.
Schroeder said he welcomed the United Arab Emirates
involvement in Volkswagen (VW), referring to a visit next
Thursday by Sheikh Hamdan to VW headquarters in the
northern German city of Wolfsburg.
"We fully welcome the Emirates involvement in
Volkswagen in Germany. This is an example how both sides
can benefit from economic relations", Schroeder said.
Sources in the oil-rich Arab nation said last Friday
(April 23) that the Deputy Prime Minister was likely to
sign a deal to buy a stake in VW during his visit to
Germany.
VW said the primary reason for the visit was to
complete an agreement for Abu Dhabis state-owned Mubadala
Development Company to purchase Leaseplan, Europe's leading
car fleet management firm, along with Volkswagen and a
Saudi partner, from Dutch bank ABN Amro for a total of two
billion euros (2.38 billion U.S. dollars).
