- Story Text: National coach Rudi Voeller admitted on Thursday that a
row enveloping German football is affecting his side's
preparations for Saturday's World Cup qualifier against England.
The row centres on lurid allegations made about the
private life of Germany's coach-designate Christoph Daum which
have prompted calls for him to be stripped of the post.
Voeller told a news conference on Thursday: "I would not be
honest if I told you these allegations were not affecting
everyone in the squad.
"I am realistic and realise these problems are going to
follow us around for weeks or even months. So I must send out an
urgent plea and ask everyone to leave this matter alone until
after Saturday's match with England."
"There are so many fans at home who will be watching the
game, desperate for us to win, and I am worried that if these
allegations continue it may affect the team's performance."
Liverpool left-back Christian Ziege made light of the
situation, saying, if anything, it had made the team more
determined to write their names into the English record books.
"The squad is determined to make their mark in the last ever
game at Wembley," said Ziege. "The match will go down in history
and we are keen to be remembered as the winning side."
Both sides had a poor Euro 2000, during which England beat
Germany 1-0.
But both have rallied since with England holding world and
European champions France to a 1-1 draw in Paris and Germany
winning their opening group nine World Cup qualifier against
Greece.
"I do not think you can judge either side on the display at
Euro 2000 because we both dramatically under-performed," Voeller
said.
"Both sides have proved that the displays in Holland and
Belgium were not a fair reflection -- with good performances
against Greece and France respectively."
Germany striker Carsten Jancker is in serious doubt for the
match after being unable to train on Thursday because of a foot
injury.
"If the match was tomorrow then he wouldn't be able to
play," a team spokesman said. "We are still hoping he will be
better by Saturday."
If the Bayern Munich striker is not fit squad captain Oliver
Bierhoff will probably start Saturday'g group nine game up front
after missing the 2-0 qualifying victory over Greece last month.
Three other injury doubts -- Mehmet Scholl, Carsten Ramelow
and Sebastian Deisler -- took part in training at Wembley on
Thursday.
