- Story Text: Cash at the blink of an eye? The world's first cash machine to use a camera that scans the eye-ball and read the pattern of the iris after the customer has inserted the card has been unveiled in the United Kingdom and could spell the end of the pin number.
The Nationwide Building Society launched the trial at its head office in Swindon on Thursday (April 23).
The system uses a camera to capture a digital record of a user's iris - the coloured portion of the eye - in minutes.
This is a once-only procedure which does not involve any intrusion into the customer's eyes. There is no need to shine any form of light or laser beam into the eye - the iris pattern is fully registered by camera only.
The system can then verify the customer's iris record within seconds from a central database or smart card when a user carries out a transaction.
When a new-born baby first opens its eyes, the membrane covering them tears, causing a marking of the iris that remains throughout that person's life.It is also unique - even identical twins have differing irises.A service working on the basis of such identification, therefore, should be considerably more secure than that currently existing.
Pioneered by NCR Financial Solutions Groups and developed by Sensar Inc, the system will be on trial for six months to test customer reaction to the new technology and its commercial viability.
Richard lander from NCR Financial Solutions Groups, said he thought the impact of the system would be huge, not just for customers who would eventually no longer have to carry a card, but to enable banks to deliver many more services direct from their terminals - stock and loan certificates for example, and mortgage arrangements.
Although there is still a long way to go, public reaction has so far been favourable. One man using the machine on display described it as great,....simple to use - painless basically" The system can also be used to withdraw cash at the counters inside the building society. The customer simply looks at a similar screen to verify his identity.
Even if the trial is a success, however, it will likely be years rather than months before these machines become commonplace on the streets. At present the technology is extremely expensive to produce en mass.
