STRONG: "Absolutely. I think there's no question in the world that only a Nairobi headquarters could bring us into direct and intimate contact with the kind of environmental problems being experienced by the majority of our constituents, the two third of the people living in the developing world. And here, Kenya is a microcosm. Not only does it have the urban areas like Nairobi, Nakuru, etc., but it has some of the best and most interesting natural resources of wildlife in the world. It has desert areas, and with these areas it has many of the problems of how to preserve these precious resources from destruction." - Story Text: In Kenya, headquarters country of the United Nations Environment Programme, the programme's Executive Director Mr. Maurice Strong spent World Environment Day on Thursday (5 June) inspecting a project in Nakuru.
The project was launched on World Environment Day last year. It is a forest nursery, established to replace trees destroyed in the area over the years.
Since the nursery began, many thousands of people have taken seedlings to replace trees they had destroyed on their property.
SYNOPSIS: Kenya is the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme. To mark World Environment Day, the programme's Executive Director Mr. Maurice Strong inspected this project at Nakuru. It's a forest nursery, first established on World Environment Day last year to provide new trees for those destroyed as the land was developed. Thousands of people have taken plants and seedling from the nursery since it was started.
These plants will be used to restore the area around Nakuru. Mr. Strong, who was enthusiastic about siting the programme's headquarters in Kenya, showed keen interest in the project. When the programme moved into the Kenyatta Conference Centre in Nairobi, it was the first major United Nations agency to be sited in a developing country. Mr. Strong said he was pleased with the decision.
Later, Mr. Strong and the Provincial Commissioner of the Rift Valley visited the Nakuru Stadium, where a rally was being held to mark Environment Day.
Seven thousand school children took part in the rally. World Environment Day is intended to focus public attention on the world environment, and to encourage people to preserve it. The children sang environmental song, and posters warning against poaching, were displayed.
