- Story Text: German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder visits the
United Nations office in Nairobi and pledges continued
supoprt for the UN
Schroeder who is on a tour of four African Nations
was met by the head of the United Nations Environmental
Programme, Klaus Toepfer and the Executive Director of
Habitat, Anna Tibaijuka.
His visit to the United Nations shows Germany's support
for the Unep, with financial commitment stretching back to
1974.
Germany, at over $ 5.8 million, is now the second
biggest contributor to UNEP's core funding, known as the
Environment Fund, after the United Kingdom.
Germany has, since 1998, provided over $1.75 million
towards the UNEP-brokered Stockholm Convention on
persistent organic pollutants (POPs) of which important
amounts have helped developing countries address various
threats to the environment.
Speaking to the international media after a closed
door meeting with Klaus Toepfer, Anna Tibaijuka and other
United Nations officials, Schroeder praised Klaus Toepfer's
efforts at the United Nations.
"Of course personal intergrity, human experiences the
life experience of Klaus Toepfer qualify him for any
concievable office in the international or national
frontline," said the German leader.
Schroeder planted a tree at the United Nations grounds
before he left.
He will visit South Africa and then Ghana.
