- Story Text: Executives from the European companies involved in
supporting the Concorde fleet have said they will fully
cooperate with investigators searching for the cause of the
crash, just outside Paris.
The Farnborough airshow in Sourthern England is a
yearly event which gathers thousands of people ranging from
simple plane fanatics to heavy weight aerospace industry
executives.
The European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS),
together with BAE Systems (formerly British Aircraft
Corporation), provides technical support for the Concorde
fleet.
Executives from the European companies which help build
and maintain the Concorde fleet entered crisis talks at the
EADS chalet in Farnborough as soon as news of Tuesday's crash
broke.
On Wednesday, EADS' co-chief executive, Philippe Camus,
said the industry would fully cooperate with investigators
searching for clues as to why the special Concorde flight had
crashed.
"We will fully support the official investigation and we
have sent a special team to Paris for this purpose. However
the investigation remains the responsibility of the relevant
authorities.
"Any speculation on possible causes for the accident are
premature as long as this investigation are not finished. For
this reason we will not enter into any reasoning about this
matter today. Nevertheless we personally set up a team to
follow the investigation immediately after we first receive
information about the accident of yesterday and we are in
close contact with all parties relevant to this issue," Camus
said.
EADS, the newly merged leader of the European aerospace
industry, provides the technical support on the French side
through the operations of Aerospatiale Matra. Air France has
six Concordes. BAE Systems, in the UK, provides similar
technical support for British Airways' seven-strong Concorde
fleet.
Gerard Blanc, EADS spokesman, denied the industry's
response was a panic reaction.
"It is not uncommon for any accident which happens in the
world, for any aircraft manufacturer to offer his forces to
this investigation team. We have also in this team, not only
representatives of EADS but also we have representatives BAe,
we have representatives Rolls Royce, we have representatives
from snecma. All of them have been gathered this morning to a
place which is next to Roissy where they have indicated their
preparedness to help the investigation," Blanc said.
A bookstore at the Farnborough show displayed copies of a
book written by the first Englishman to fly Concorde.
Captain Brian Trubshaw, now 76, flew the plane on its
maident flight from Filton, near Bristol, to RAF Fairford, in
Gloucestershire, on April 9, 1969.
He described the journey then as "wizard - a cool, calm
and collected operation". He also stressed on Tuesday night
that the Concorde has had an impeccable record until the
crash.
Trubshaw is now a member of the British Airways Flight
Operations Safety Board.
