- Story Text: Iraq has said that although it accepted United Nations
resolution 1441 and the return of inspectors, the Americans
were still beating drums of war and amassing troops in the
Arab Gulf.
U.N. weapons inspectors continued their work a day after
the visit to Iraq by Chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix
and U.N. nuclear agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei.
Iraqi Vice-President Taha Yassen Ramadan lashed out at
the United States on Tuesday (January 21).
"In spite of our acceptance to deal with the resolution
1441 and our acceptance of the return of inspectors, we are
not convinced that this prevent the aggression, we know well
the virulent American-Zionist intentions," he said to a
delegation of Arab teachers.
Since the United States started its build-up of troops in
the Arab Gulf, Iraq has been witnessing visits made by many
delegations coming to voice solidarity with the people of
Iraq, one of the visiting delegations are the Arab teachers.
"It is up to the international community to ask the United
States why there is such a build-up and beating drums of war,
you said if Iraq accepted the return of inspectors there would
be no aggression, either the inspectors or aggression. Iraq
accepted the resolution 1441 and cooperated with the
inspectors, but the build-up and beating drums of war has not
changed, this is the responsibility of the international
community to ask the United States, why such build-up. Masses
all over the world and European areas start saying this and
responding America why such drums of war," the vice president
said.
"The aggression will take place at any moment, they are
not caring for the inspectors, the American administration
doesn't pay attention to its agents (in the region) nor its
clients, they are the cheapest for them," he added.
Meanwhile Iraqi women took to the streets in the downtown
of Baghdad, and marched towards the United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP), chanting anti-war slogans and voicing
support to President Saddam Hussein.
Dozens of U.N. arms experts combed more Iraqi sites for
possible biological, chemical and nuclear weapons on Tuesday,
while Washington and London continued with plans to launch war
against Iraq.
Experts from the U.N. Monitoring, Verification and
Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) and the International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA) drove to at least nine sites from south
to north of Iraq, Iraqi officials said.
An UNMOVIC biological team visited an agricultural college
at Abu Ghraib 17 km (10 miles) northwest of Baghdad. Another
team searched a nearby agriculture research centre. Missile
teams went to the al-Mu'tasim facility, a missile plant 70 km
(42 miles) southwest of Baghdad and al-Amiriya in Fallujah.
A chemical team visited al-Qaqaa facility which belongs to
the Iraqi Military Industrialisation Commission.
An IAEA team headed to the southern city of Basra while
another went to the al-Tuweitha compound, the main site of
former Iraqi nuclear programmes. A multi-disciplinary team
went to undisclosed sites in Basra.
In Mosul, 375 km (225 miles) north of Baghdad, the
inspectors visited a private factory for producing building
plaster. The inspectors maintain a base in Mosul.
