- Story Text: Day two of the National Democratic Convention has seen
a building of tensions between police and protesters,
resulting in dozens of arrests in downtown Los Angeles.
However, the bulk of the protesters staged a peaceful march
through the streets of the city.
45 demonstrators were arrested Tuesday (August 15)
afternoon for what police say was a conspiracy to commit
felony crimes.
According to Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD)
spokesman David Kalish, a gathering in designated protest area
Pershing Square got out of hand when dozens of demonstrators
donned masks and began harassing local business owners,
attempting to destroy property in the process.
The 30 adults and 15 juveniles were processed in a parking
lot and loaded onto police buses after being separated from
their belongings, which police claim contained homemade
weapons.
Kalish identified these weapons as homemade flame throwers
and sling shots along with paint balls and explosives.
Those arrested yelled for their attorneys, stating the
peacefulness of their protests as they were carted away in
police buses to a holding pen at police headquarters.
The arrests followed in the wake of criticism leveled by
human rights groups over LAPD conduct during a riot outside of
the Staples Center Monday evening (August 14).
Following the arrests anti-establishment activists
marched through the streets of downtown Los Angeles. They gave
the two-fingered peace salute as they marched past lines of
waiting police.
