- Story Text: The United States ambassador to Russia joined Orthodox
believers in Moscow to pray for the souls of those killed in
the September 11 attacks and called on Russia and the United
States to be "on the same side" in acting against Iraq.
Ambassador Alexander Vershbow joined worshippers at
the St Catherine American Orthodox Church in central Moscow.
Russian citizens, former Cold War enemies of the United
States, expressed a large outpouring of condolences
immediately following the plane attacks that killed over 3,000
people last year in New York, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania.
The Russian government has also been strongly supportive
of the White House's war on terrorism, likening it to its own
battle against Muslim separatists in the republic of Chechnya.
Russian President Vladimir Putin made a call to American
President George W. Bush as soon as midnight struck on
September 11 to express Russia's continued support.
The post-September 11 unity has come under increasing
strain from differences over the use of military force against
Iraq and Russia's relations with Iran and North Korea, which
Bush has labelled as part of the "Axis of Evil" along with Iraq.
Ambassador Vershbow, however, sought to downplay the
differences as he laid a wreath at a memorial board dedicated
to victims of a bomb blast in 2000 which Russian officials
believe may have been a terrorist attack.
"We recognise that Russia itself has been the target of
terrorism and that is why I am here today because we want to
underscore the real solidarity between our two nations in
trying to defeat the enemy of terrorism," said Vershbow.
