- Story Text: A U.S. academic, expelled from China following a conviction
on espionage charges, arrived in the United States
Wednesday, and was reunited with his family.
Li Shaomin, a management professor at City University
in Hong Kong, was expelled Wednesday morning, a day after the
conviction of U.S. permanent residents Gao Zhan, and Qin
Guangguang also on spy charges.
The 44-year-old arrived at San Francisco International
Airport, where he was reunited with his wife, Liu Yingli, and
nine-year-old daughter Diane. He was also debriefed by U.S.
State Department officials before meeting with reporters.
"I'm really glad to be home to see my family. I would
like to thank our government for its great help, and support
during the five-months ordeal I have been through. I would
like to thank all the friends, all the people who have helped
me, who have supported me through this period. I want to
thank all of your people - the press people - who have covered
my case and followed my case. That's all I want to say now,"
Li told reporters.
Li was put on a plane to San Francisco, as Beijing appeared to
be trying to improve relations with the United States, by
moving to resolve the espionage cases ahead of a visit by
Secretary of State Colin Powell on Saturday.
