- Story Text: Sergio Garcia on a quest for a win at Loch Lomond and a
Ryder Cup place, has renewed confidence following recent US
tour golf wins, and is looking forward to competing in the
British Open next week.
Currently ranked seventh in the world, the 21-year-old
Spaniard is preparing for this week's Scottish Open at Loch
Lomond, Scotland.
He shared his expertise with a host of local children,
showing them his swing and fitness techniques.
Eighteenth in the Ryder Cup points table, he must play his
way into the top 10 over the next few weeks if he is to earn
an automatic slot in Sam Torrance's European team for The
Belfry.
"Yes, all tournaments are big, especially when the Open is
coming up, it's an important tournament for the Ryder Cup, I'm
going to play well and try to get as may points as I can,"
Garcia said.
The Scottish Open begins on Thursday (July 12) at Loch
Lomond is a good warm up ahead of the British Open at Royal
Lytham which begins on Thursday week.
"Well it's very good I've been playing very well recently
for the last two or three months, I've had two victories in
the last couple of months and I feel pretty confident and
these last two weeks I've been practising at home. You never
can tell what will happen," he said.
Garcia has won both the Colonial and the Buick in the last
couple of months and has now made his breakthrough in the
United States. The statistics show he is among the best
drivers on the US Tour.
"Well I think more than anything that the advantages are
that you can get to a better level, a higher level for the
toughness of the tour, I think it's the best tour in the
world, you really get your game to a higher level that is one
of the great things of playing there (United States)," Garcia
said.
This year, he is hitting it even further - and straighter.
He puts it down to hard work but also makes mention of his new
golf ball, the Titleist Pro-V1. He believes that it has given
him between 20 and 25 extra yards - something which has
enabled him to get up at more of the par-fives and given him
an easier time of it at the par-fours.
"I think the European is second I think it's a great tour,
but unfortunately it's not the biggest tour in the world, and
that's why we have to go to the States to be the best player
we can be,"
With more than two million dollars in winnings to his name
this year, Garcia entered the top five in the world rankings
30 months after being 399th and is currently.
