- Story Text: Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov has opened two
days of intensive talks with the new U.S. administration in
the hope of securing answers as to how Washington plans to
build its proposed anti-missile shield.
Ivanov's first meeting on Friday (May 18) was with U.S.
Secretary of State Colin Powell.
On Thursday Ivanov told reporters that be hoped that "bumpy"
incidents in relations in the period after President George W.
Bush's inauguration were behind them. He said it was important
for Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet before a
planned encounter alongside July's G8 summit of industrialised
countries in Genoa, Italy.
Ivanov also said he would seek explanations on the
anti-missile defence scheme that Bush has made clear he will
develop regardless of both Russian and Chinese objections and
a cool reception from some U.S. allies. Ties have also been
strained by expulsions on both sides of diplomats alleged to
be spies.
In addition to his meeting on Friday with Secretary of
State Colin Powell, Ivanov will also hold separate talks with
Bush and ther U.S. national security adviser Condoleezza Rice.
