- Story Text: United States marines have been arresting looters in
Baghdad, as more than 2,000 Iraqi policemen reported back for
work in a move that U.S. authorities hope will help stem the
looting that has followed the dramatic collapse of Saddam's
24-year iron-fisted rule last week.
In Baghdad, there were indications that the looting
which has plunged city residents into fear was subsiding by
Monday (April 14).
U.S. forces captured the city last week after more than
two weeks of aerial bombardment, but could initially do little
to quell the chaos and lawlessness that swept through the
capital, prompting angry protests from many residents.
But U.S. Marines have now detained thieves who took
advantage of the power vacuum left following the downfall of
Saddam Hussein.
Hundreds of Iraqi police officers and civil servants have
also come forward to help restore order in the capital.
The hidden dangers for U.S. troops, however, were
demonstrated again when a fierce firefight broke out in the
city centre overnight (April 13-14) near the Palestine Hotel
which has been housing the international media.
