- Story Text: One U.S. soldier and four Iraqis killed when bomb
explodes on busy Baghdad road.
A bomb exploded in the middle of a busy Baghdad
road on Friday (December 5, 2003), killing one American soldier
and at least four Iraqis as a military convoy and a packed
minibus passed in opposite directions, police and witnesses
said.
They said 16 Iraqis were also wounded in the attack,
one of three bombings in or near Baghdad on U.S. convoys on
Friday. There were no immediate reports of casualties in
the other two.
The U.S. military said in a statement that the device
exploded between the first and second vehicles of the
convoy, killing one soldier.
"Suddenly a bomb went off. I came running to rescue
people. I saw one whose brain was blown off. We carried
them and put them in police car. The Americans were injured
too, but most of the injured were Iraqis who were in a mini
bus. The Americans came and took their injured and left,"
one witness said.
The minibus was badly damaged in the blast, with all
its windows blown out. Pools of blood were visible on the
floor of the wreckage. Witnesses said the front vehicle of
the U.S. military convoy was also hit.
The Iraqi casualties were rushed to several hospitals
in the capital.
More than 180 U.S. soldiers have been killed in action
in Iraq since Washington declared major combat over on May
1. During that period, scores of Iraqis have also been
killed in almost daily assaults by anti-American insurgents.
