- Story Text: U.S. troops maintain heavy presence in Saddam's
hometown of Tikrit after three soldiers wounded by roadside
bomb.
U.S. troops were out in force patrolling the
streets of Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit on Tuesday
(December 16), three days after his capture.
Feelings are running high in the town and earlier on
Tuesday three U.S. soldiers were wounded when a roadside
bomb hit a military patrol in Tikrit, which is 170 kms (110
miles) north of Baghdad.
U.S. military spokesmen said an improvised explosive
device (IED) detonated near the soldiers' vehicle while
they patrolled the town.
The injuries of the three were described as not
life-threatening.
The U.S. soldiers patrolling the streets after the
attack looked tense and watchful. Iraqis, in their turn,
stared at the soldiers as they walked down the street.
U.S. military helicopters flew overhead and tanks were
also seen rolling down the road.
Tensions were heightened after Saddam was captured on
Saturday (December 13) at an underground hideout 15 km
(nine miles) south of Tikrit.
On Monday (December 15), clashes erupted between U.S.
soldiers and hundreds of students from Tikrit College who
staged a pro-Saddam demonstration. Chanting "God is
Greatest" and "America is the enemy of all peoples", some
protesters were hit with batons by U.S. forces who tried to
disperse the crowd during Monday's protest.
U.S. forces are holding the ousted dictator at a secret
location while deciding what to do with him.
