- Story Text: Members of the comic book industry have joined together
to help the victims of the World Trade Center attacks,
publishing a tribute book to the heroes, many of whom died
trying to save them.
As the entertainment industry struggles to find ways to
acknowledge the September 11 attacks, members of the comic
book industry have decided to confront the issues head on.
Marvel Comics, publishers of cult classic comic,
Spider-Man, will depict a 'terrorist attack' in New York City
in its upcoming Amazing Spider-Man No.36. It tells the story
of the attacks from the viewpoint of this comic universe with
cartoon characters and poignant dialogue. In it, victims ask
Spider-Man why he could not stop the terrorists.
The release of this Spider-Man issue follows the
publication of a tribute book called "Heroes." Released on
October 17th, the book is filled with drawings of firefighters
and police officers. Priced at 3.50 US dollars a copy, 3 US
dollars from each sale will go to the victims of the September
11 attacks. One hundred thousand copies sold in the first day,
effectively raising more than 300 000 US dollars.
One of the cartoonists responsible for the artwork in both
these publications is John Romita Jr. The San Diego based
cartoonist has been drawing Spider-Man and other cartoon
characters for twenty five years, but this was the hardest
task he'd had to face. Surrounded by pictures of the World
Trade Center attacks, he tried to convey this very real
disaster in the world of cartoons. He said the project is
something he struggles with every day, concerned he will not
be able to do justice to those who lost their lives. Romita is
also suffering from nightmares and cold sweats as he draws and
depicts the images of the attacks on a daily basis.
Owner of the Golden Apple Comics store in Hollywood,
Bill Leibowitz, said at first they were concerned about the
introduction of the 'Heroes' comic.
"But (the) product is really exceptional and its got
beautiful rendering, really touching and poignant thoughts
its a very non exploitative but thought provoking kind of a
book," he added.
The editor in chief of Marvel Comics, Joe Quesada said
they wrestled with whether or not to depict the events in a
cartoon format, but he believes it would have been "callous"
not to acknowledge the issues.
Amazing Spider-Man No.36 will be published in November,
the 'Heroes' tribute book is already being reprinted following
huge public demand.
