- Story Text: U.S. Troops tighten security and search an area in
southwest Baghdad where a soldier was shot last week.
To hunt insurgents, U.S. troops manned checkpoints
on Sunday (January 11) in Dora neighbourhood, southwest
Baghdad, where a U.S. convoy was targeted on January 2.
U.S. soldiers deployed on the road and stopped and
searched cars heading into the area, and body-searched
pedestrians.
"On January 2nd we had a U.S. forces get injured, a
young soldier lost his leg on the other side of the river,"
said Captain Bruce Carter.
The Americans are intensifying search operations to
deter attacks on its troops which Washington has blamed on
loyalists of former president Saddam Hussein.
U.S. forces have been launching frequent attacks in the
outskirts of Baghdad on areas of suspected hideouts of
insurgent fighters.
US troops have also been conducting a major offensive,
called Operation Iron Grip, in which rebel positions on the
outskirts of the capital have been hammered with artillery
and canon fire, sending thunderous booms across the capital
at all hours.
