- Story Text: Mr Zehdi Terzi, the Palestine Liberation Organisation representative who acts as an observer at the United Nations, and Mr Mowaffak Allaf, the Syrian Ambassador to the U.N., have expressed differing views on the outcome of the Israeli general elections. Both men spoke to reporter Richard Watt on Wednesday (18 May).
The right-wing Likud Party emerged as the largest single group after the Israeli general elections on Tuesday (17 May) -- ousting the Labour Party which has dominated Israeli politics since the foundation of the state in 1948. The Likud Party is led by Menachem Begin, aged 63, who has tried eight times to win power before his success on Tuesday.
SYNOPSIS: Mr Allaf said it was of little importance which party was power, while Mr Terzi was less optimistic.
