- Story Text: Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi has arrived in
Washington for a summit with U.S.President Bill Clinton.
Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi's plane touched
down at Andrews Air Force Base on Sunday morning (May 2), one
day before the Prime Minister is scheduled to meet President
Clinton at a Washington summit.
On Saturday (May 1) in Chicago, Prime Minister Obuchi said
he was not considering calling a snap election and wanted to
take steps to boost corporate competitiveness and address
Japan's rising jobless rate as fast as possible.
Some Japanese ruling party politicians have suggested that
Obuchi might call an election for the Lower House before an
October 2000 deadline to cement the party's grip on power
before a possible worsening of the economy later this year.
The U.S.has been pressing Japan to ensure that its economy
recovers while lecturing it on the need to deregulate and
carry out structural economic reforms.
Both messages are likely to be heard again when Clinton
meets Obuchi on Monday, although Japanese diplomats insist the
meeting will not be acrimonious.
