- Story Text: Representatives of 35 Commonwealth states, meeting at Marlborough House in London, recommended on Thursday (4 March) that their governments urgently give economic aid to Mozambique now that it is applying Untied Nations sanctions against the breakaway British colony of Rhodesia.
A meeting of the Commonwealth "sanctions-against-Rhodesia" committee welcomed an announcement by President Samora Machel the day before that Mozambique, which became independent from Portugal last June, was fully implementing the sanctions.
The meeting agreed that Commonwealth Secretary-General Shridath Ramphal contact the Mozambique government to find out possible areas of economic assistance.
Commonwealth Secretariat sources said no specific aid figures were discussed at the meeting.
These sources also said that there was no danger of the aid money being used for arms for black nationalist guerrillas.
