- Story Text: London's Tate art
gallery celebrated its centenary on Monday (July 1) night with a gala dinner
attended by princess Diana and a wealth of celebrities.
Diana was celebrating her 36th birthday at the lavish dinner andaAll eyes were
on her dress as she arrived.
It was the princess's first public appearance since she returned from New York,
where she attended a special preview of her dress auction, which raised millions
for charity.
Also attending the event were United States (U.S.) actor Steve Martin, Film
Director Lord Attenborough, Singer Brian Ferry, Lord Linley, Iman Bowie and
French actress Carole Bouquet.
Bouquet, who played alongside Roger Moore in the James Bond film "For Your Eyes
Only" and is the official face of Chanel No5, was there because the perfume
company sponsored the 350 pounds sterling a ticket evening.
Silkscreen prints by Andy Warhol from Chanel's collection were on show around
the Tate octagon, which was filled with tables for the 500 guests.
The Tate, founded and given to the nation by Victorian sugar merchant Henry
Tate, was opened on July 21, 1897 - by Diana and the Prince of Wales.
Guests enjoyed a private viewing of the whole gallery.
The gala dinner raised money to help develop a Tate Gallery of British Art on
the site once its 20th century collection has gone to the new Tate Gallery of
British Art being developed in a former power station at London's Bankside. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
