- Story Text: Golf...and Severiano Ballesteros of Spain took his fourteenth major title in less than two years with a win in an international tournament sponsored by Martini at Epsom in Surrey England on Sunday (21 May). Ballesteros won GBP 6,000 ($10,500) after he finished the last of the 72 holes to have a total of 270, 14 under par.
SYNOPSIS: At R.A.C. course at Epsom Ballesteros started the day and the final round 12 under par. Nick Faldo of Great Britain was in second place. His 67 put him five strokes behind Ballesteros at the finish. John Morgan also of Britain had a final round of 68 to give him third place.
But it was Ballesteros who made the play throughout the four days. Golf critics say the course, with four par 4s within Ballesteros's driving distance and long holes within reach of his mid-irons, suited the Spaniard's natural game. It seemed Ballesteros's main concern was to improve on his best collection of birdies for a tournament. He has scored 27. During this tournament he got 26.
But the 21-year-old Spaniard did not restrict his flair to the fairways. His play on the greens was also often superb.
As Ballesteros drove to victory he said he was looking ahead to the colgate P.G.A. championship being staged later this week at the Royal Birkdale course in Southport.
But for the moment the young golfer's thoughts were with the GDP6,000 ($ 10,500), a prize which took him to third place in European money list for the year.
