Two auction sales in London on Thursday attracted buyers of both English literature and of historical objects.At Sotheby's sale rooms a silver cigarette case inscribed "From Sherlock Holmes 1893" was sold for 12,000 pounds (about 19,000 United States dollars).It was presented by the creator of the great sleuth, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, to the man who illustrated the stories, Sidney Paget, as a wedding present when he married in 1893.
Among other items sold at the auction was a bronze death mask of the author James Joyce.It fetched six thousand pounds (nearly 10,000 U.S.dollars).One of the signed and inscribed first editions of the Ian Flemimg book "Live and Let Die" sold for 3,500 pounds (about 6,000 U.S.dollars)
British poet W.H.Auden's "Elegy for J.F.K." on the death of U.S.President John F.Kennedy fetched 1,200 pounds (about 2,000 U.S.dollars).
At Christie's one of the world's largest and finest collections of model trains and accessories,the Coluzzi Collection, was being sold in three, massive auctions.The sale was expected to realise at least one million pounds sterling (1.6 million U.S.dollars).
Most expensive item in the sale was a Marklin Wurttemburg gauge 4 locomotive and tender of about 1912 which was expected to fetch between 30,000 to 40,000 pounds sterling (45,000 to 60,000 dollars).Oldest item in the sale was a French clockwork floor train which was sold for 12,100 pounds sterling (20,000 dollars).A Marklin Grand Station of 1909 was expected to fetch between 20,000 to 40,000 pounds sterling (32,000 to 64,000 dollars).
