- Story Text: Manchester United scores 7 goals against the L.A. Galaxy during the first match of the Guinness International Champions Cup on Wednesday (July 23) night at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. The match also marked the debut of new Manchester United coach Louis van Gaal, who coached the Netherlands team to third place at the World Cup earlier this summer.
Van Gaal notably introduced some changes to the Manchester United playing strategies, saying he wants to play with two strikers instead of four.
"When I am introducing a new system then every good result helps and that is what I mean, that that helps with confidence in the new system. So, it's better to win 7-0 than to loose then the players shall doubt the system and now I don't have that problem."
Long time L.A. Galaxy coach Bruce Arena, who also coached the 2002 and 2006 World Cup U.S.A. Men's team, says the match was a good lesson for his team.
"Really, a good lesson because we've done this for a number of years against quality clubs and we've always been able to hang in a lot better than we did tonight so, I think it's a good lesson for our team."
Manchester United fans were thrilled by the success of the team in the first match.
""Yeah, I expected United to come here and kick their ass to be honest, yeah. Even though it's a bit of a warm up game, it started off a bit slow but they got into the game. The goals really have been given away a bit easily so I think United is worth a lot more than this but, you know, it's a good game. It's a good fun for us Brits traveling to L.A. to watch the game it's good," says Daniel Williams, who happened to be in Los Angeles for a business meeting and made some time to attend the game.
While Manchester United fans outnumbered L.A. Galaxy fans on the bleachers, the home team fans were proud to stand by their team.
"I feel like I'm very proud of my team and very proud to be standing out amongst all the many fans."
Manchester United will continue to tour for the rest of the Guinness International Champions Cup with upcoming matches in Denver, Washing and Michigan against AS Roma, Milan and Real Madrid, respectively. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
