- Story Text: Italian police have scuffled with aircraft maintenance workers protesting outside Alitalia's Rome headquarters.
Italian police scuffled with aircraft maintenance workers outside Alitalia's Rome headquarters on Tuesday (March 18) who were protesting against the prospect of job losses if the airline is bought by Air France-KLM.
Police in riot gear have been guarding the airline office where talks are taking place between unions and management. A crowd of 300-400 workers from a company based in the southern town of Naples, which carries out maintenance on Alitalia aircraft blew whistles and pushed forward towards the Alitalia building protesting against probable job losses.
"We work in Naples for them" said one of the angry protesters pointing at the Alitalia building, "I do not accept that myself and 1,500 people will find themselves out on the street" she said.
After the scuffles the riot police allowed the protesters to enter the courtyard of the building. Staff inside peered out of windows as the demonstrators yelled 'Outside, outside' urging Alitalia management to come out and speak with them. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
