- Story Text: Greek taxi drivers took to the streets of Athens on Tuesday (July 19) as thousands marched towards parliament, calling for the government to rescind a new taxi deregulation law.
The law, which came into effect on July 2nd, is part of the Greek government's controversial reforms as agreed with the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.
Tuesday is the second day of a 48-hour strike by the taxi drivers, and some think that it's going to be a tough road ahead.
"This is going to be a tough battle because of the arrogance of one minister. We ask him to retreat," said Thimios Liberopoulos, president of the taxi drivers and owners union.
July is the peak tourist month for Greece and the strike has been criticised by tourism industry officials and the Greek government.
Greece is in the middle of a debt crisis and is under increasing pressure to get its affairs in order, as international lenders work out a second loan package for the country. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
