- Story Text: Israeli air strikes hit targets in Beirut's southern suburb on Friday (August 11, 2006), following a fresh warning from Israel that it will widen its military offensive in the area.
Several loud explosions echoed through the city in the early hours of Friday and smoke could be seen rising from the neighbourhood hours after the strikes.
Many residents have fled the southern suburb in recent weeks.
Several missiles slammed into the Dahyieh neighbourhood, a Hizbollah stronghold in Beirut which has been almost completely levelled in Israel's air raids.
The streets were deserted and smoke was still rising from the rubble hours after the strikes. Many residents have fled the southern suburb in recent weeks.
On Thursday Israeli warplanes dropped leaflets saying Israel would widen its offensive on Hizbollah-dominated southern suburb of Beirut and warned its residents to flee the area. In other raids on Friday, Israeli air strikes killed seven people and wounded one in northern Lebanon on Friday, Lebanese medical sources said. But Israel said plans for a deeper ground assault into its northern neighbour were on hold to give diplomacy a chance.
The fighting, which began after Hizbollah seized two Israeli soldiers in cross-border raid on July 12, has killed at least 1,018 people in Lebanon and displaced almost million. In Israel, 122 have been killed. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
