- Story Text: A Palestinian militant was killed and four others were wounded in an Israeli air strike on Tuesday (January 5) in the central Gaza strip, medics and a Palestinian militant group said.
An Israeli military spokeswoman confirmed an air strike took place but had no further details.
In Hamas-ruled Gaza, Palestinian medics said five were hurt in the air raid in the town of Khan Younis, and that one had died of his injuries.
The Popular Resistance Committees, a militant group, said its members had been targeted by the attack.
The fatality was the first of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict this year. Israel killed six militants in two separate incidents in Gaza and the occupied West Bank late in December.
While Israel often launches air strikes in coastal Gaza in response to rocket launchings at Israel, the violence had grown less frequent since a war in Gaza a year ago in which 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed.
Most of Israel's recent air attacks in Gaza have targeted tunnels used by militants for smuggling from Egypt, and have often not caused any casualties. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
