Four Palestinians were wounded in the latest Israeli air strike on the Gaza Strip on Wednesday evening (April 9), in the most bloody day the area had recently experienced. The air strike hit a motorcycle and car in Gaza City, wounding a militant and three civilians, hospital officials and Hamas security sources said.
An Israeli army spokeswoman said the army targeted militants who were involved in the attack on the Nahal Oz terminal earlier in the day in which Palestinian gunmen killed two Israeli civilians.
Wednesday's death toll of nine was the highest for a single day since Israeli forces waged a Gaza offensive that killed scores of Palestinians in early March.
Hamas warned on Tuesday of an "explosion" in the territory if Israel continued its economic blockade. Israel tightened the cordon after the Islamist group, which is formally committed to the Jewish state's destruction, seized control of Gaza in June.
Meanwhile, fear of a new Israeli push into Gaza led to panic buying with residents lining up at bakeries to stock up on food.
One resident said, Ahmad Almaizani, said: "People got scared so they started buying food supplies and storing up their homes. There is a possibility for a major military operation into the Gaza strip that is expected from the enemy." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
