- Story Text: Israeli forces launched an air strike on the home of a Palestinian militant in the Gaza Strip early on Monday (September 4, 2006) and troops began a new raid into the north of the territory, residents said.
The army said it had targeted a building used for making and storing weapons in Jabalya refugee camp, a militant stronghold.
Palestinians said it was the home of a militant from al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, part of President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement. Two people were slightly wounded in the attack.
The army did not comment on reports by residents that several tanks had crossed from Israel into the north-eastern edge of the Gaza Strip close to Jabalya.
Israel has pressed an offensive in the Gaza Strip for more than two months to try to recover a soldier who was abducted in a cross-border raid and to try to put a stop to rocket attacks on the Jewish state.
More than 200 Palestinians have been killed, about half of them civilians.
Israel withdrew troops and settlers from the Gaza Strip almost one year ago after 38 years of occupation, the first time it had given up Jewish settlements on land that Palestinians seek for a state. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
