- Story Text: Israel carried out a series of air strikes in the Gaza Strip after Palestinian militants fired a rocket and mortars at Israel, Palestinian officials and the Israeli military said on Wednesday (May 26).
The air strikes were a response to the cross-border fire from the Hamas-controlled territory, a military spokesman said.
About a dozen people were lightly wounded by debris, Palestinian medical officials said.
No Israelis were hurt by the rocket fire.
A Palestinian militant group that identifies with al-Qaeda took responsibility for firing the rocket and mortars at Israel.
Hamas security sources said the overnight air strikes hit an airport in the southern Gaza Strip which is not in use and a Hamas training camp in the north.
The Israeli military spokesman said the strikes targeted tunnels used by militants.
The Hamas Islamist group, which seized the Gaza Strip from forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in 2007, has said it has reached an understanding with other militant organisations to halt rocket fire.
But smaller groups have refused to cease and continue to fire at Israel.
Israel says it holds Hamas responsible for any attacks carried out from the coastal territory. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
