- Story Text: The Israeli military carried out an air strike on the Gaza Strip overnight on Sunday (May 30), an army spokesman and Palestinian witnesses said.
No injuries from the attack were reported.
The Israeli army spokesman said the air strike targeted a tunnel used by Palestinian militants to smuggle weapons and was in response to a rocket fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip on Saturday.
The Hamas Islamist group, which seized the Gaza Strip from forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in 2007, has said it has reached an understanding with other militant organisations to halt rocket fire.
But smaller groups have refused to cease and continue to fire at Israel.
Israel says it holds Hamas responsible for any attacks carried out from the coastal territory.
Israel launched a devastating military offensive in Gaza in December 2008, saying its aim was to stop daily rocket fire aimed at its southern cities. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
