- Story Text: An Israeli missile killed six Hamas gunmen and wounded one other in the Gaza Strip on Monday (August 20), Palestinian hospital staff said.
The Israeli army confirmed that it had fired at the vehicle carrying the militants. A spokesman for the Israeli army said the militants had fired rockets into Israel earlier in the day.
Hamas says it has fired only mortar bombs but not rockets into Israel since its bloody takeover of the Gaza Strip from the rival Fatah group in June.
Other militants have continued to launch rockets and thousands have been fired across the border into nearby towns and agricultural communities Israel causing some damage and few injuries or deaths.
Hamas identified all six dead as members of their military wing. It said the vehicle was hit as it approached a Hamas security post the al-Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip.
One of the dead was named as local Hamas commander Mohammed abu Arab.
The army spokeswoman added the missile was not fired from an aircraft.
Palestinian residents had previously said that the rocket was fired from an aircraft. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
