- Story Text: Palestinians in the Gaza Strip woke to destruction on Monday (July 26) after Israeli aircraft carried out three airstrips overnight.
An Israeli army spokesman said the airstrips had targeted two tunnels he said were used for smuggling weapons into the southern town of Rajah and a weapons manufacturing site in northern Gaza.
He added that the strikes were a response to rockets fired by Palestinian militants from Gaza into Israel on Saturday (July 24).
No casualties were reported.
In late December 2008, Israel launched a military operation in Gaza with the stated goal of stopping militants' cross-border rocket and mortar attacks on Israel. The offensive killed some 1,400 Palestinians and destroyed 5,000 houses, Palestinian officials in Gaza have said. Thirteen Israelis, including 10 soldiers also died.
The Hamas Islamist group, which seized the Gaza Strip from forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in 2007, has said it has reached an understanding with other militant organisations to halt rocket fire.
But smaller groups have refused to heed the call and continue to fire at Israel.
Israel says it holds Hamas responsible for any attacks carried out from the coastal territory. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
