- Story Text: Turkish fighter jets bomb Kurdish separatist targets in northern Iraq on Tuesday according to Turkish General Staff website.
Turkish fighter planes hit Kurdish separatist targets in northern Iraq on Tuesday (December 16), the Turkish military said in a statement on the Turkish General Staff website. The statement said the planes had returned safely after bombing the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) targets.
"Turkish Air Force fighter planes successfully hit targets proven to belong to the PKK terrorist group in the afternoon hours of Dec. 16, 2008," the statement said.
No civilians had been injured in the attack, the statement said. Ankara has boosted military action against the PKK in recent months, as casualties on both sides have risen. PKK rebels claimed responsibility for blowing up a section of the Kirkuk-Ceyhan oil pipeline between Iraq and Turkey last month.
Turkey, the European Union and United States refer to the PKK as a terrorist organisation. Around 40,000 people have been killed in fighting between the PKK and the military since 1984, when the PKK took up arms to establish an ethnic homeland in southeast Turkey. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
