  • Story Text: Scuffles broke out in Athens' Syndagma square between riot police and youths who threw rocks at the security forces patrolling a march of striking public and private sector workers on Wednesday (February 24) Up to 20,000 protesters joined the march during a 24-hour strike against the government's austerity measures aimed at wrenching Greece out of a debt crisis that has shaken the euro zone.
    Some of the protesters and riot police faced off briefly. At first the security forces retreated to a side street.
    Police said they used tear gas at students they say were trying to storm the university building on the margins of the march.
    It is the first joint strike called by public and private unions representing half of Greece's workforce of 5 million since the Socialist government won elections in October.
    Most shops were open, although some banks were shut down and the capital's chaotic traffic was quieter than usual. The Athens stock exchange was operating normally.
