- Story Text: One killed, another critically wounded in overnight Israeli airstrike on tunnels in Gaza.
Palestinian sources report one Palestinian was killed and another critically injured in an Israeli air strike on targets in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip early on Sunday (September 5), after Palestinian militants fired a rocket from the territory into Israel.
The flare-up on the Israeli-Gaza border came just two days after the start of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.
Early on Saturday Gaza militants fired a rocket into southern Israel, causing no injuries, the Israeli military said. Hours later, witnesses and Hamas security officials said Israeli aircraft struck targets in Gaza, including smuggling tunnels along the border with Egypt, killing one man and injuring another.
An Israeli military spokesman said he was checking the report.
The cross-border violence was the first since Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met in Washington to relaunch peace negotiations and was a stark reminder of the obstacles both leaders face.
Hamas Islamists routed forces loyal to Abbas to take over the Gaza Strip in 2007. The group rejects Abbas' peace moves and has vowed to continue attacks against Israel.
Hamas has claimed responsibility for two shooting attacks in the past week in the West Bank, where Abbas holds sway, including one that killed four Israelis. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
