- Story Text: The Israeli Army released a video on Saturday (March 10) showing militants targeted in Gaza, after dozens of rockets were fired on Israel.
A statement released with the video said the latest air strikes had targeted two weapons manufacturing sites. The strikes were launched in response to rocket fire from Gaza that injured four people in Israel, including one man who is reported to be in a serious condition, it added.
Islamic Jihad also released a video, showing militants launching rockets towards southern Israel. The Israeli military says about 90 rockets have been fired at Israel since Friday, including 10 longer-range Grad rockets intercepted by Israel's "Iron Dome" missile interceptor system.
Both Islamic Jihad and the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) claimed responsibility for most of the rockets and mortar shells fired.
After weeks of relative calm, violence along the Israeli-Gaza frontier escalated on Friday (March 9) when Israel blew up a car in Gaza City, killing two militant leaders. Israel said one of the militants killed on Friday had been involved in plotting a cross-border attack from Egypt.
Israeli air strikes on the Hamas-controlled region have killed at least 12 people in two days of violence.
In the West Bank, the Palestinian Authority voiced anger toward Israel's attacks on Gaza strip.
"This Israeli escalation in Gaza is completely condemned and we urged the world community and the quartet and specially the United States to put enough pressure on Israeli government to stop this escalation," said Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesman for the Palestinian Authority.
The sounds of explosions and rocket fire reverberated across coastal Gaza and parts of southern Israel on Saturday.
Some half a million people were urged to remain indoors and public events were cancelled. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
